ROME ARRIVAL & BAROQUE ROME TOUR After landing at Rome Airport, complete customs and immigration formalities. Then your driver/guide will welcome you to Italy and escort you and your luggage to the coach. Transfer to your hotel and check in. After you settle into your room you may like to rest or explore some of the city on your own. In the evening join your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner either in your hotel or at a local restaurant. After dinner embark on a walking tour through the heart of Baroque Rome. There is no one single Rome, but a synthesis of its history: antique Rome, Christian Rome, Renaissance Rome, Baroque Rome and modern Rome. But it is the Romans that make Rome what it is. View the Pantheon, the best preserved monument of antiquity, built by Augustus' son-in-law, Agrippa, and completely renovated in Hadrian's time. The Pantheon contains works of art and the tombs of the kings of Italy and of Raphael. Next stop at Piazza Navona considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Rome with its three fountains: the 19th century Neptune's Fountain, the 17th century Bernini's masterpiece-the Fountain of the Four Rivers, and the Moorish's Fountain. Naturally, a stop at the splendid Trevi Fountain is a must. By tradition, throwing a coin into this fountain ensures a return to Rome. OVERNIGHT: HOTEL PALATINO, ROME

VATICAN MUSEUM & SISTINE CHAPEL TOURToday enjoy a sightseeing tour of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel, which is one of the most splendid museums in all the world. Begin your visit with the Corte della Pigna where your expert guide will introduce you to the history and beauty of the Sistine Chapel. Continue your tour to see the hall featuring Greco-Roman sculptures, the Hall of Tapestries, featuring magnificent 16th century Flemish tapestries executed from Raphael’s designs; and the Maps Gallery, a 120-foot long gallery, hung with interesting ancient maps. The completion of the tour occurs in the Sistine Chapel, the Pope’s official private chapel where election conclaves are held. In order to respect its reverence, the Vatican has requested silence during your visit. Be sure to view Michelangelo’s ‘Creation” and the famous ‘Last Judgment’ before leaving the Chapel. Upon exiting the chapel, you’ll find yourselves at the most western end of St. Peter's Square, one of the most beautiful and famous in the world, surrounded by Bernini's imposing colonnade that seems to "embrace" it with its 284 columns. In the background, the massive structure of the Basilica with its gigantic facade, the largest church in Christendom. After your tour enjoy the balance of the afternoon and evening at leisure for independent activities and dining. OVERNIGHT: HOTEL PALATINO, ROME |

ROME HIGHLIGHTS & TRANSFER TO CRUISE This morning set off with a local guide to show you around the prominent legendary monuments, palaces, ruins, squares and fountains of Rome. Stop to visit the most famous monument in this capital city, the Colosseum, which is the famed battleground of the gladiators and to some the martyrdom of early Christians. It was the first permanent amphitheater to be built in Rome and consisted of a vast ellipse with tiers of seating for 50,000 spectators around a central elliptical arena. Its monumental size and grandeur as well as its practical and efficient organization for producing spectacles and controlling the large crowds make it one of the great architectural monuments achieved by the ancient Romans. Located beside the Colosseum is the Roman Forum, which was the center of political, commercial and judicial life in ancient Rome. It is mostly characterized by its temples and arches erected to celebrate the military triumphs of the day. After your tour enjoy some time at leisure before boarding the coach and transferring to Civitavecchia where you will board your cruise ship and set off on the next portion of your vacation. |
